Natural and Affordable Dental Care Protocol
Anything that goes into the mouth of an individual within the autism spectrum should be natural, including toothpaste and mouthwash.  Ingredients that wouldn't even be allowed in food are permitted in commercial toothpaste and mouthwash.  Even most toothpaste and mouthwash labeled as natural often contains artificial ingredients. We offer a simple approach to dental care that can save your family money, reduce the need for expensive dental work and improve overall health.

Ingredients that the FDA does not allow in food are permitted in commercial toothpaste and mouthwash.  Even most toothpaste and mouthwash labeled as natural frequently contain artificial ingredients.  Here is some simple parent-to-parent advice on how to have healthier teeth and gums, improve overall health, and reduce the cost of dental care!
In addition to making your own toothpaste and mouthwash, Autism Coach now offers some natural gluten and casein free tooth care options.  Please click here to view our natural tooth care products.  In addition to these our Organic Sulfur is amazing at fighting gum disease (it actually tightened up my teeth in my gums) and can be taken internally as well as used as a mouthwash.
1.  Make Your Own Toothpaste

However, it is ridiculously easy and cheap to make your effective toothpaste that actually fights cavities and gum disease and tastes great!  You can get all the ingredients on the internet, and most of them at your local health food store.

Add glycerin to baking soda to form a pasty mixture that can be applied to a toothbrush with a spoon or other instrument.
  • Put a capful of 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide* in a glass or plastic mixing bowl
  • Add an equal amount of baking soda
  • Add enough food grade glycerine to taste good and have the toothpaste consistency you desire - it is anti-microbial
  • Add a few drops of your favorite natural food grade essential oil - such as oil of wintergreen, peppermint, or lemon to the mix.
Stir up and adjust ingredients so they have the consistency you like and put into final product into a refillable camping toothpaste tube or a commerical mustard or ketchup bottle with a tip at the end!  Inexpensive toothpaste that is better for you and more affordable than store-bought.  You probably have enough raw ingredients by the time you've made this for at least a year's supply of toothpaste for an entire family under $30.

*CautionHandle hydrogen peroxide with care, keep out of eyes and off skin, and keep the bottle of hydrogen peroxide out of reach of children.  It will be safe when diluted in toothpaste and/or mouthwash.

2.  Make Your Own Mouthwash

Using the sameas  ingredients above, pour the following into a standard quart glass measuring cup:

  • 5 capfuls of 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide*
  • 7 oz water (preferably distilled)
  • A few drops an essential oil flavoring of your choice, such as mint or wintergreen, to taste
  • 1/4-1/2 oz liquid natural glycerine derived from palm oil to sweeten if desired
Pour the mixture into an empty plastic or glass bottle.  For the same $30 or so investment in ingredients for toothpastes you get a year's supply of mouthwash as a bonus!

3.  Get the Best Toothbrush Ever!

To add the finishing touch to this dental program, I highly recommend you find a dentist locally who carries the Philips Sonicare toothbrush.  It is available at stores and through the mail, but if you get it from your dentist, you may able to get a prescription for it and have it covered by your health care plan.  They run anywhere from $110 to $175.  This is an amazing tooth brush that blasts away tartar build-up that contributes cavities and gum disease.  The same bacteria that contribute to cavities and gum disease also put you at greater risk for heart disease.  This toothbrush leaves your teeth feeling and looking like they do after a dental cleaning and may reduce the frequency required for dental cleanings, as to be determined by your dentist.

You don't even have to brush rigorously, just aim it between your teeth and gums and gently go back and forth across the front facing portion of your upper and lower teeth and then the inside, which makes an effective toothbrush for individuals with autism.  It does vibrate and on occasion make a high-pitched vibrational sound.  So if these are sensory issues for your family, you wouldn't want to get this toothbrush.  It has detachable, replaceable heads, so one toothbrush base, plus the heads could be used by the entire family, which can be color coded with bands so familiar members can distinguish whose brush head is whose.  The stand also comes with an ultraviolet compartment to store the heads in and sterilize the toothbrush heads and it even has a great carrying case to make it easy to travel with.

4.  Floss

Although the toothbrush does a great job, flossing ensures that any additional food is removed from between the teeth.  If you are going to pick one time of the day to floss, generally it is best to floss before bed so that food does not sit in the mouth overnight.
Be Health Concious at the Dentist's Office
We of course, recommend regular dental check-ups and taking care of dental work that needs to be addressed.  However, to ensure that dental work does not have a negative effect on the health of individuals within the autism spectrum we recommend the following basic guidelines:
  • Request the dental hygenist use natural unflavored pumice for a dental cleaning - avoid artificially flavored products.
  • Decline fluoride rinses as fluoride depresses the immune system.
  • Never let the dentist put in a mercury filling.  Mercury is a potent neuro-toxin and many individuals within the autism spectrum have high levels of mercury in their bodies.  A ceramic or gold filling is preferable.
  • If you do decide to have mercury fillings removed, which generally improves overall health, go to a dentist who specializes in natural dentistry who will ensure that you do not swallow or inhale any portion of the removed filling, which can cause mercury to be absorbed into the body and brain.

In Summary

Combining the toothpaste recipe with the recommended toothbrush, and flossing, and you will have a program that keeps your teeth and gums healthy, keeps your body healthy, and potentially saves you and your family thousands of dollars in dental bills.
