This innovative product originaged from the observation confirmed by studies that consuming cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale) significantly reduces the risk of cancer.  A team of researchers lead by Paul Talalay, M.D., J.J. Abel Distinguished Service Professor of Pharmacology, at Johns Hopkins, discovered an active compound in these vegetables, sulforaphane, that helps to mobilize the body's natural cancer-fighting mechanism.  Sulforaphane is produced as a defense mechanism of cruciferous vegetables that is created when a plant, such as broccoli, is bitten into, giving cruciferous vegetables their distinctive pungent taste.  Sulforaphane stimulates the immune system to mobilize Phase 2 detoxification enzymes that netralize highly reactive forms of cancer causing chemicals before they can damage DNA and promote cancer.  Sulforaphane is a very potent promoter of Phase 2 enzymes.*

How does this relate to autism?  The researchers created an autism study based upon based upon the frequently observation by parents that their children's level of functioning would improve when the child was running a fever.  Why would this be?  It turns out that when the body is running a fever, the body's heat-shock response is activated, creating a cascade of metabolic events that protect cells from stress caused by fever, including protection from oxidative stress.  When levels of oxidative stress is reduced, other metabolic processes can dramatically improve in efficiency and function including more efficient mitochondrial energy production within neurons and processes that lead to increased production of neurotransmitters that tend to be deficient in individual on the autism spectrum. The John Hopkins researchers discovered sulforaphane also causes a metabolic heat shock response, conferring protection against oxidative stress.  It is estimated that about half of individuals on the spectrum improve in level of functioning when they have a fever; if you or your child has had this response, he or she is likely to benefit from increasing levels of sulforaphone.  Sulforaphane has been shown to be the most powerful naturally-occurring activator of Nrf2, the switch which governs activation of cell defence.*

Studies on identical twins, where one twin has autism and the other does not, indicate that epigenetics, the silencing or turning on of genes appears to be the difference, where the autistic twin has more genes that are silenced.  One gene that is silenced or reduced in effectiveness turns out to by the MTHFR gene that expresses the enzyme methyltransferase.  Research indicates that most individuals on the autism spectrum have one or more genetic single nucelotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on this gene which reduce the effectiveness and output of this enzyme in critical metabolic pathways including methylation and sulfation, which lead to the production of glutathione, the body's most powerful anti-oxidant, the primary molecule by which heavy metals and industrial pollutants are removed from the body.  My hypothesis is that sulforaphane effects this epigenetic mechanism, improving function of the methyltransferase gene, leading to increased production of glutathione and this is the same mechanism that causes some autistic kids to function at a higher level when they have a fever.

In addition, sulforaphane has been shown in studies to have an anti-bacterial effect against pathogenic organisms in the intestinal tract,  including h. pylori, the bacteria identified as a cause of ulcers.  Reducing levels of pathogens in the gut also reduces toxic by-products that interfere with optimal neurological function.  For more links to intriguing research concerning sulforaphane and broccoli sprouts, see the research links at the bottom of the page.

The researchers determined that broccoli sprouts contain the highest levels of glucoraphanin, the naturally-occurring precursor to sulforaphane. The problem was you would have to eat a lot of broccoli sproutns a day to get a therapeutic dose of sulforaphane and certain enzymes within the sprouts tend to inhibit the production of sulforaphane.   Also, sulforaphane is very unstableand cannot be isolated as a supplement, it tends to degrade quickly and has to be generated by consuming glucoraphanin and then having the Myrosinase enzyme convert it to sulforaphane.*

About Our Glucoraphan Broccoli Sprout/Myrosinase Powder and Capsules

Our Australian manufactured broccoli sprout powder is superior because it is organically grown and processed carefully to represerve the bioactive constituents of the broccoli sprouts.  It also includes the enzyme, Myrosinase, critical to converting the glucoraphanin into sulforaphane.  Preliminary anecdotal reports from the autism community concerning our specific product are extremely promising.  Our Glucoraphan Broccoli Sprout/Myrosinase powder is produced by proprietary technology and is a concentrated source of broccoli phytonutrients, delivering 20-50 times more Sulforaphane than the vegetable.  Just 1 or 2 teaspoons or capsules daily of concentrated Glucoraphan Broccoli Sprout Powder yields bioactive Sulforaphane. Monitored at every stage of production, Glucoraphan Broccoli Sprout/Myrosinase powder retains essential Glucoraphanin as well as Myrosinase, the enzyme destroyed by extraction or other inappropriate processing. Such ‘extracts’ are inert and fail to deliver sulforaphane; our product is NOT an ‘extract’.   A fine powder of 100% whole Brassica oleracea var. italica sprouts, EnduraCell® is grown hydroganically with no harmful chemicals and is FREE OF ADDITIVES.

The capsules provide a convenient means to take the product for those who do not like the taste of broccoli sprouts and also include selenium in the form of selenomethionine to help support antioxidant activity.

Clinical Trial using Sulforaphane in ASD

Recently published (October 13, 2014) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is a small double-blind clinical trial wherein Broccoli sprout-derived Sulforaphane was used as the active intervention in a placebo-controlled randomised study in 45 autistic males aged 13-27 over 18 weeks.

Findings:

Within a few weeks, those taking the broccoli sprout supplements showed substantial behavior improvement, rated by social interaction, abnormal behaviour and verbal communication (34% improved when rated by the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist – ABC and 17% on the Social Responsiveness Scale - SRS). On discontinuation of the treatment, total scores on all scales rose to pre-treatment levels within 4 weeks.

The Results

These graphs taken from the study show the effect of sulforaphane in the ABC and SRS scores. Equally apparent is the loss of positive effect on these scores when sulforaphane is discontinued. This means that the effect of sulforaphane gradually diminishes soon after the supplement is stopped.

How much Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder could provide a similar effect?

The clinical trial used an experimental broccoli blend. The table below is an estimate of the equivalent amount of Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder required to match this effect.

Body weight of male participant Equiv. Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder Dose/day (approx.) Equiv. Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Capsules Dose/day (approx.)
50 pounds (22 kg)
.9 grams (about 1 scoop)
1-2 capsules
99 pounds (45 kg)
1.8 grams (about 2 scoops)
2 - 3 capsules
198 pounds (90 kg) 3.6 grams (about 4 scoops)
3 - 4 capsules
> 198 pounds (90 kg) 5.4 grams (about 6 scoops)
5 - 6 capsules

Essentially, the daily dose used corresponds to 1 gram of Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder for every 55 pounds (25 kg) body weight.

Improving the Diet Helps Glucorophanan Work Better

When sulforaphane ‘switches on’ protective genes, these genes go to work to produce thousands of enzymes needed for the complex web of biochemical processes healthy cells engage in. Many of these enzymes in turn use a variety of micronutrients as if they are spark plugs to ‘kick start’ the chemical reactions. These micronutrients include various vitamins, minerals and trace elements. As a result, if your child is deficient in nutrients, these genes may not be able to be activated when sulforaphane is present.  To provide all the building blocks needed for optimal benefit from the sulforaphane, we recommended supplementing with a product such as Green Multi-Plus or Chlorella, both of which are rich in amino acid building blocks and trace minerals.  A good, natural multi-vitamin/mineral supplement may also be of benefit, as long as it does not have excessive levels of supplement ingredients listed below under "contraindications."

Because those with ASD do not always eat well, they may not have adequate levels of certain essential micronutrients in their cells. We recommend supplementing with a product such as Green Multi-Plus or Chlorella or a good amino acid and mineral blend.  Improving the diet of a person with ASD can be very challenging and it is often easier to give in to the child’s demands for ‘junk’ food than to persevere with healthier options. The importance of a varied whole food plant-rich diet that avoids processed foods cannot be over-stated. You can even juice healtful vegies such as romaine lettuce, carrots, parsley and beets and hide them in a smoothie.  If you make a big batch of juice, you can freeze it in an icecube tray and take out cubes to blend into drinks at your convenience.

Other Effects

Sulforaphane has also been studied in connection with gastrointestinal disorders. There are studies showing its benefits in eliminating the Helicobacter pylori bacterium which can produce stomach ulcers. It has also been used to help counter Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

As many parents would be aware, intestinal dysbiosis (overgrowth of abnormal intestinal organisms) is common in those with ASD. Although the clinical trial did not investigate this aspect of the condition, Sulforaphane can also assist in normalizing intestinal function.

Are there any Side Effects?

One of Sulforaphane’s actions is to activate genes which code for the major detoxification enzymes. In some people, it appears that the detoxification process can be activated too quickly and in so doing, can release waste materials at a rate which makes the individual feel unwell – intestinal disturbance, fatigue, headache and so on. Where it is suspected that this may be occurring, one simply needs to reduce the dose to slow down the process. As the symptoms subside, it is simply a matter of gradually building the dose back up to the recommended dose over a few weeks.

In addition, where bacterial overgrowth is significant, sulforaphane is thought to produce a “die-off’ reaction, so that large number so bacteria are destroyed and their wastes emptied into the intestine. Again, it is simply a matter of slowing down the process with a smaller dose.

Where do I start?

If you are ready to start yourself or your child on a course of treatment, record body weight and check the chart for the amount of Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder you will need daily.

As an example, a person who weighs 100 kg would require 1 gram of Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Powder for every 25 kg body weight. Therefore, this person would need 4 grams daily.

OR

Glucorophanan Broccoli Sprout Capsule (700mg per capsule) 4 capsules daily (2.8 grams)

Are there any contraindications?

Because Sulforaphane acts by sending signals to the ‘switches’ within the cells, taking large doses of antioxidant vitamins will mask the signal so that the sulforaphane won’t have any effect.

While taking the sulforaphane, avoid megadoses of the following supplement ingredients:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin A
  • N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
  • Antioxidant formulations

Can I just grow broccoli sprouts?

It's probably good to eat broccoli sprouts on a regular basis, but it won't have the therapeutic benefit of the trial study because you would have to consume a large quantity of sprouts to get the equivalent benefit.  Also, the fresh sprouts contain an enzyme inhibitor which can reduce production of sulforaphane in your body.

Can I take Broccoli Sprout ‘Extracts’?

Some supplements are marked as ‘extracts’ of broccoli seed or sprout. These have had their essential myrosinase enzyme deactivated in manufacture and are much less effective as a source of sulforaphane. They are sometimes marked as containing ‘sulforaphane glucosinolate.'
