Creatine and Autism

Creatine , naturally produced naturally in the body, helps to supply energy to all cells in the body by increasing the formation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a compound that which stores energy in its bonds, like a rechargeable battery.

A Dr. Benjamin Lynch, a naturopathic physician, who specializes in nutrigenomics, using genetic testing create nutritional support protocols, suggests that up to 40% methylation processes in the body is used to generate Creatine, so for many individual on the spectrum, supplementing with Creatine frees up methyl donors to be used for other metabolic processes in the body.

When ATP is "charged" its energy can be released within cells for energy.  It then must be recharged.  ATP is made within each cell by  a portion of the cell called the mitochondria; the more energy a cell requires, the more mitochondria it will have.  Mitochondria produce energy for the entire cell.

Mitochondria are sausage-shaped organelles found in animal cells. They have their own DNA and can replicate themselves independent of the cell in which they reside. Their main function is in cellular respiration.

These cells use this energy to engage in operations that keep them alive and well.  At the same time the efforts of each cell also contribute to the proper functioning of our body as a whole. To do so each cell must perform an incredible number of chemical reactions every second.

The term metabolism refers to those chemical reactions collectively throughout the body.  Total body metabolism is all the energy released from all the chemical reactions and associated processes in our body;  the total of all reactions taking place in each cell added together.

Creatine is not an essential nutrient, as it is manufactured in the human body from L-arginine, glycine and L-methionine.

Its main use as a supplement/drug is among people wanting to develop their muscles, like athletes and bodybuilders. Taking the standard dose of 5-10 mg has the same effect as eating a very high protein diet. In people with muscle wasting diseases, Creatine is also used.
