Rice-Based Vitamin E  60 capsules  $29

This high-quality Rice Vitamin E is derived exclusively from rice bran and is perfect for those with soy sensitivities. It is a unique oil extract of rice bran, rich both in tocotrienols and tocopherols.  One softgel capsule contains 35 mg of tocotrienols (approximately equal amounts of alpha and gamma tocotrienols and small amounts of delta and beta tocotrienols). Each capsule also contains over 40 IU of d-alpha tocopherol, and all other known tocopherols (gamma tocopherol, delta tocopherol, and beta tocopherol). No other ingredients, or fillers, preservatives, or coloring agents are used.

Tocotrienols are in the class of Vitamin E compounds along with tocopherols. They basically consist of a double ring structure called the chromanol head and an isoprenoid tail (similar to coenzyme Q10). Depending upon whether the chromanol head has 3, 2, or 1 methyl groups attached and where these groups are attached, they are called alpha, gamma, delta, and beta tocotrienols/tocopherols. The major difference between the tocotrienols and the tocopherols is that the tail is saturated in the case of the tocopherols, but is polyunsaturated in the tocotrienols. As with the fatty acids, a polyunsaturated structure means that the molecule is more reactive and more fluid. This means, for example, that alpha tocotrienol would be much more protective of cell membranes than alpha tocopherol, and would more easily be regenerated by Vitamin C. In fact, research has shown that in cell membranes, alpha tocotrienol is 40-60 times more protective against free radicals than alpha tocopherol. Other research has shown that gamma tocotrienol blocks enzymatically the synthesis of cholesterol. In addition, tocotrienols: 1) may reduce arterial plaques and enhance blood flow, 2) are potent inhibitors of platelet aggregation and thromboxane, 3) protect serum lipids from oxidation, including LDL and HDL, 4) reduce carotid stenosis (narrowing) and may help prevent stroke, 5) serve as a trap to harmful nitrogenous radicals, 6) act as anti-proliferative and anti-cancer agents, and 6) provide powerful oxidative defense for the skin.
