My
School Day was designed by speech therapists specializing in helping
autistic children, using real life video clips to take the child into a
typical school day, including the classroom, cafeteria, and playground!
This program allows the child to view appropriate interaction and social
behaviors within the school environment and interact! The child is asked
to identify, produce and explain several social situations in response to
real life video embedded in interactive software. Parents, therapists, and
educators can work with children using the program to target peer
relationships, rules and rituals of the classroom, appropriate play at
recess and appropriate lunchtime behavior. This program is an ideal tool
to focus on conduct and activities at school! The
program focuses on helping children look for visual cues to understanding
peers, how to handle difficult situations, and learning what behavior is
considered appropriate and not appropriate in the class. This
program is the perfect to prepare a child for school or help the child
better understand the routine and behaviors associated with school.
My School Day may be integrated into Discrete Trial Training / Applied
Behavior Analysis intervention programs, with the child's progress tracked by the
program.
Research
Showing Effectiveness
Does the Social Skill Builder approach,
which combines social stories with interactive technology, produce
measurable results in the real world? A 2004 study, conducted in Loudoun
County, Virginia public schools, tested students learning social skills
in a traditional therapeutic setting against students who used Social
Skill Builder software. The students using Social Skill Builder’s
My School
Day software achieved significant gains in every
category of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, including
Communication, Daily Living Skills, Socialization, and Adaptive
Behavior.
Result Highlights
 |
On average, students who used My
School Day software gained 10 percent in every
category of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, compared to a 3
percent gain when using traditional methods alone.
|
 |
When comparing subjects in the same age category
(age 9), those who used My School Day software demonstrated higher
post-test communications scores when compared to students using
traditional methods only.
|
 |
Surveys by speech-language pathologists using My
School Day software indicated that students stayed
on task better when using the interactive technology.
