Dizzy Disc, Jr®
Balance is the first sensory system to develop
within the womb. Balance is the integrator of other senses,
including sight and hearing. Many kids in the autism spectrum love to
spin. One theory as to why this is because they need to
develop their balance (vestibular) system and are not getting enough sensory
input from their balance system if they are not moving. By
strengthening balance, the child also increases their potential to
connect the other senses and make the connection between what they
see and what they hear. Balance is also the key to riding a
bike and this toy may contribute to develop the underlying ability
to ride a two-wheeler.
These kids love spinning on the Dizzy Disc. When it is tilted at an
angle while they are standing and spinning it causes them to
automatically use their whole body to stay balanced, further maturing
their balance system. The Dizzy Disc is a wonderful toy with
long-lasted play value - 3 years later both my kids still like to
hop on once in a while and go for a spin. The child can use
the Dizzy Disc laying down, kneeling, sitting, or standing.
For bike riding purposes, we recommend the child use the Dizzy
Disc standing and that it at first be used level with parental
supervision, until the child is comfortable with it. Once
the child has mastered spinning around (say 20 times) with no
tilt, the parent gradually increases the angle of tilt.
Irregardless of its therapeutic value the Dizzy Disc, Jr is a great
toy for any kid. It has a 16" top textured surface and spins by means of internal ball bearings.
The wide 18” non-slip base provides maximum stability and a
built in carry handle. It also features a handle and lever
for adjusting the incline of the turning disc. Recommended for
ages 5 and up and can hold up to 100 pound child.

integrating the senses is the Balance
