What is Audiblox?
Audiblox is a structured program of cognitive
exercises primarily using plastic colored, blocks, to develop core
cognitive abilities, including visual and auditory memory.
Developed by Dr. Jan Strydom of South Africa, this program is
primarily used to help children with dyslexia, but has also been
used successfully by children who are high functioning within the
autism spectrum.
Audiblox was extremely helpful in improving my
son's ability to visualize. When my son started
Audiblox last fall, he could only remember a pattern of 4-6
blocks; but by early summer, he could remember patterns of up to
30 blocks and was improving overall in his ability to visualize
and solve visual puzzles, such as tangrams.
The program is outlined in the book, the Right
to Read, which is provided with the Audiblox kit. To
effectively implement this program, you will want to read this
book cover to cover and watch the training video before
implementing this program with your child. If you have
questions about implementing the program, we will pass your
questions along to an Audiblox expert in the U.S.
Based upon my experience with my son and
Audiblox, I would say that for Audiblox to be effective, parents
must make a time commitment of a 1/2 hour every day, 5 days a week
for several months to achieve lasting benefit. Typically,
initial improvement can be seen after 25-30 hours of practice.

How To Use Audiblox
The more one practices the Audiblox
exercises, the better the results that one can achieve. Competence
in any skill comes through practice over a period of time, and
this system is no exception.
After six weeks to three months of daily
practice, one can expect to start seeing visible results.
The Audiblox Kit
The Audiblox program in The Right to
Read is mostly used to help children (and adults) overcome
dyslexia or reading problems, but it can also be used simply to
improve the cognitive and learning skills of children.
A supplementary manual, which accompanies the Audiblox
kit, contains the following:
- The Audiblox Dysgraphia Program
- The Audiblox Spelling Program
- The Audiblox Math Program
- The Audiblox School Readiness Program
- An Advanced Program for High School Learners/Adults
The supplementary manual also contains tips,
and frequently asked questions.
The following teaching materials are also
included:
-
Colored blocks: Ninety-six colored blocks,
equally divided into six different colors — black, white,
red, green, blue and yellow.
-
Screen: The screen is used to shield blocks
from the learner.
-
A set of color cards with preprinted
patterns: These are used for one of the Audiblox
exercises.
-
A set of letter cards: The letter cards are
used for the Spelling exercise in the Spelling Program.
-
Reading book and word cards: The reading
book Rainbow Dreams contains a story made up of the 800
most commonly used words in English. Word cards of words
appearing in chapters one to three, and word lists of words
appearing in chapters four and five, are included in the
package. Both American and British editions of Rainbow
Dreams are available.
-
Audiblox video: The Right to Read
contains clear descriptions of the frequently used Audiblox
exercises, accompanied by photos where necessary. The Audiblox
video also demonstrates these exercises in detail. It is
available in both NTSC and PAL format. NTSC is compatible with
American and Canadian VCRs.
